Fashion Trends for Fall/Winter 2017

Every season, new looks and colors hit the runways, and clothing manufacturers worldwide clamor to keep up with the changing trends. Everyone wants to stay in the loop as to what is going on in the fashion world so that they can keep their wardrobes up to speed. That’s why it’s fun to keep an eye on what the major designers are doing so you can predict how their eyes will shape the world of fashion. Here are some of the new trends you can expect to see on the runways and the streets this season.

Power Reds

Color usually depends on a variety of factors, such as the theme that accompanies it. If it’s a peaceful time of year, it’s unlikely that the trend will be a neon green or pink. For this Fall Winter, you can expect Power Red to fully take over. Givenchy, Tod’s and Fendi all displayed bright, bold reds in their collections. It signifies a time of upset and upheaval - red is a historically divisive color, after all. But it also signifies a boldness and braveness as we look toward a more collective future. You’ll see bright reds in everything from underwear to evening wear.

Brightness and Boldness

Themes are the key element of design and are a huge part of the trends of every season. They usually start with a small spark from one designer and are picked up and enhanced by others. Usually colors are pretty closely tied to themes - so in this year’s Fall/Winter collection, you can expect to see a lot of vibrant reds and silvers to showcase a bright, bold attitude. You can also expect to see a lot of padding and pleats - a sort of cushioning against the times.

Folk Art

Another theme of the year is Folk art - designers are stitching together wildly different patterns and unexpected prints to create something really funky and cool. This also includes a cool take on cowboy-inspired looks, including Raf Simons’ debut collection for Calvin Klein. It offers a modern take on cowboy boots, leather vests, cowhide prints and themed western prints like cacti, etc.

Glittery Boots

Don’t be shy with your footwear this year, ladies. 2017 is all about showing off your personal style with sparkly shoes. Chanel is offering a pair of space age go-go boots covered with silver sparkles, and Rihanna has been spotted sporting the Saint-Lauren sparkle boots that could probably be spotted from a passing airplane! It’s the must-have boot of the fall, so if you want to stay up to date with the trends this year, hop into a pair of these!

Vintage Furs

Conjure up images of 70s stars wrapped in fur because that’s what is coming back in style this fall. Go for very basic looks, no frills. Zippered fur coats and jackets will be featured by Yeezy, J.W. Anderson and Vetements. They look like they’ve been retrieved from your grandmother’s closet, a la Margot Tenenbaum, but they will be all the rage this season.

Extra Denim

The 80s denim looks are coming back this Fall too - or as some like to call it, the “Canadian tuxedo.” Head-to-toe denim is going to be super popular, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to 1984. Go with a slim-fitted, well-tailored look and you’ll fit right into any scene this Fall Winter.

Cozy Knits

Even haute couture can be comfortable. Knitting is going to be a big style this year - look for lots of modern twists on classic cozy knits. The wool is broken down and styled in new ways, often with fringing, but it’s still got all the creature comforts you need to get you through a cold winter.

Checkered patterns will be all the rage this Fall Winter in both casual wear and sophisticated office wear. Expect to see a lot of grey business suits with a checkered pattern for both evening wear and buttoned-up formal wear. Stella McCartney, Balenciaga and Calvin Klein all featured stylish checkered patterns in their fall winter collections this year.

Retro Hats

If hats are your thing, you’re in luck this year, as designers are having a lot of fun with them! Designers like Marc Jacobs, Maison Margiela and Coach 1941 are all throwing it back to the past with cool new versions of old brimmed caps and more. You’ll see lots of cool fabrics like shearling and fur - it’s a great way to express your own personal style!

Zippered Looks

Zippers aren’t just for functional purposes! A lot of designers are incorporating them into the style of different clothing items, such as using them on sleeves and shoulders or as decorative options on bags and purses. It’s a great way to dress up otherwise basic cuts and shapes. Major designers like Dior, DVF and Ports 1961 are creating new and funky zippered looks.

There will be plenty of new and funky looks hitting the runway this Fall Winter! It’s always exciting to see which trends fade out over time and which ones take off - let us know what your favorite trends are this year!
